Margaret Mitchell is a computer scientist and researcher specializing in machine learning and ethics-informed AI development. Her work spans natural language processing, natural language generation, assistive technology, and AI ethics. She currently serves as Chief Ethics Scientist and researcher at Hugging Face, where she advances machine learning data practices and responsible AI development. Previously, she was a Staff Research Scientist at Google AI, where she founded and co-led the Ethical AI group, operationalizing AI ethics across the organization. She has also held research roles at Microsoft Research and Johns Hopkins University, with work focusing on computer vision-to-language generation and Bayesian modeling in NLP. Margaret is a co-founder of WiNLP and has led numerous initiatives at the intersection of diversity, inclusion, and computer science. She is widely recognized for pioneering “Model Cards” for ML transparency, co-authoring “Stochastic Parrots,” developing Microsoft’s “Seeing AI,” and creating methods to reduce algorithmic bias. In 2023, she was named one of TIME’s Most Influential People, and her work has earned accolades from the U.S. Secretary of Defense and the American Foundation for the Blind.
