A decade ago high-throughput sequencing and gene editing advances promised a transformation in drug discovery using AI. While there have been notable achievements, early target discovery with AI have moved relatively slow. This is about to change: recent learnings and progress suggest the industry is accelerating, promising a transforming how we do research and accelerating our ability to use ML to accelerate drug discovery and the underlying mechanisms that modulate disease. In this talk we will review early challenges in applying AI to early target discovery, recent progress, and outline where the industry is heading in the next 5 years; concluding that Pharma and Biology are positioned to be the most exciting area for machine learning and AI in the coming decade. No biology background is needed for this talk.
